Textile and equipment trade shows 2017??
« on: November 12, 2016, 10:19:39 AM »
Hey guys I would like to start researching for possible trade shows to attend in 2017. Like most industries I'm sure that there are a bunch of shows to choose from but I was hoping to get the input from you guys to help narrow it down.
I know about Shot show in Vegas and have made some good contacts over the years but this year I would really like to attend a show where I can see the "machine" side of the sewing industry. I think it would be cool to see programmable shape tackers and industrial sewing machines along with other equipment technologies.
Is there such a show that would be attended by by sewing contractors for the military and backpack industry?
Please add what Country the show is in, as we have members here from across the world.
Thanks, Scott

IFAI (http://www.ifai.com/) - Annual. Unknown dates. Think it's around October. USA. Has some sub-shows around the US and Canada. I think this is what you'd want.
ITMA (http://www.itma.com/) - Every 4 years. 2019 in Barcelona, Spain. This is were you will find the newest machinery for the textile industry, but it can be anything from a filament extruder to a huge dye factory setup. Every single machine manufacturer will be there tho, but it is very big league.
Outdoor Retailer (www.outdoorretailer.com) - 2 times a year. Salt Lake, Utah. Probably no machine manufacturers, but a bunch of textile companies. It's civie SHOT basically.

I second IFAI. We made some good contacts there.

TexProcess Americas - http://texprocess-americas.us.messefrankfurt.com/atlanta/en/for_exhibitors/welcome.html - is gigantic. It's every two years and there was one this year, so the next one is 2018. Every major sewing machine manufacturer had a large booth, and Henderson and some other companies also had large booths full of robotics. The fabric side was also extensive. I think you'll really like this one.

TechTextil - http://www.techtextilna.com/atlanta/en/for_exhibitors/welcome.html?nc - is put on by the same people that do TexProcess. It's not as large, and focusses more on fabric, but there are still a lot of machine manufacturers and dealers showing.

All three of these are geared toward sewn product apparel manufacturers, from apparel to military to awnings. They are not aimed at retail product sales.

TechTextil also has a German show, which I believe is the bigger of the two. It's annual and in May. http://techtextil.messefrankfurt.com/frankfurt/en/aussteller/willkommen.html

My supplier had a booth there at IFAI and I had asked about it. Honestly it is more for big companies looking to make large purchases. Example would be a large awning manufacturer.

Guess we should add a couple of more here:

ISPO (http://www.ispo.com/en) - Annual (3 times a year, Munich, Beijing and Shanghai). Next Munich event is Jan 28-31, 2018. Mainly focused on sports gear and equipment, primarily towards mountain/skiing. There are however 2 halls dedicated to sourcing, where there are a lot of Asian manufactures and a few eastern European ones, both for finished goods but also raw materials. 1 hall is dedicated to "Textrends" where all the big suppliers show up. Not too much in terms of machinery, and it's mostly towards seam sealing/bonding (MACPI, Framis etc.) but there was a few sewing machine companies there including Juki. A lot of the higher end insulation and fabric companies are there. As a note, they are usually busy meeting up with their clients.

IWA Outdoor Classics (https://www.iwa.info/en) and EnforceTac (https://www.enforcetac.com/). Annual, Nürenberg, Germany. EnforceTac is 1st-2nd March 2017 and IWA is 3rd-6th March 2017. Enforcetac is the closest you'll get to a European SHOT show. If you're looking for someone to do OEM work for you in Europe, EnforceTac is where I'd go. I haven't been to IWA since they split it into 2 parts so I am not sure about what the general IWA is like anymore.
(I might be going to both this year)

I'll be attending IWA this year on March the 4th. EnforceTac is geared towards MIL/LE personnel, otherwise you can get in with an invitation from one of the exposing companies. They pretty much stay in place for IWA afterwards, only the public changes.

The IFAI was a great show, it was an outstanding opportunity to see and try different equipment, as well as meet up with suppliers. Notably was the opportunity to meet some of the crew from GSI.
Next on the agenda will be the outdoor show in Salt Lake City this winter, I will need to research it some more.

I'm about an hour south of SLC.  Went to the Outdoor Retailer show a few months ago, was a great experience.  Met a lot of great folks, got some sweet samples of some new products (Owl Buckle from ITW, some stuff from Fidlock, etc.)  However, it will not be held in SLC any more.  Due to the political fallout of the Bears Ears National Monument controversy here in Utah, several big companies said they would no longer attend the show in Utah.  This prompted the Outdoor Retailer show to be moved to Denver from this point forward.  It boiled down to both sides acting childish, in my opinion, but it is what it is.  Sad day for me, because it was quite conveniently located.

Not sure I'll make it to Denver in January, due to a (hopefully) change in full time jobs as well as finishing the interior of the house renovation, but I'm going to try.
