Modifying mag pouch/chest rig question
« on: July 12, 2017, 02:46:57 PM »
I recently picked up a SADF chest rig and as you know it is made for AK mags. What I want to do is shorten the mag pouches about 2 inches so my M4 mags stick out a little bit making it easier to grab.

If you're familiar with the SADF design, it's a basic t-shape pouch, right? I should be able to un-stitch it from the bottom and cut (hem) the bottom of pouch and then re-stitch it to the chest rig base.

If you know a better way to go about this project please let me know.

Without seeing how the actual pouch is sewn to the rig, can't know for sure, but I'm willing to bet the easiest option is to remove the pouch, mod it and sew it back on. I can't see being able to easily modify it while on the vest still.

Picture added.

You're absolutely correct. I'll need to take it off the rig all together.

That's what I would do. I dig that retro Black and Tan look though. I might to make up one of our Patrolling Rigs like that!

It looks like a T style. The internal dividers might cause you a shitty time disassembling it, especially if it's old and used and full of that nice SA dirt.
If it was my rig to use, I'd just add some sleeping pad foam at the bottom to bump the mags up.

Also, isn't the pouches design for Galil/Vektor R4 mags? Just a technicality ;)

Ya, I thought about just adding foam but...the tinkerer in me says tear it down and make it my own!

Let's not get too crazy with technicality  8)

Finally got around to working on this chest rig. I tore the front pouch off and shortened it to 5 1/4 inches - i wanted to keep the small pen pouch, hence the height...Anyway, I also threw some binding tape on the mag flaps because they were just raw edges before. I also lowered them 1.5 inches which freed up some room above them for added any loop fields or small pistol/flashlight pouches later on...

All in all, fairly easy endeavor. I did have a slight miscalculation and ended up sewing about 1/4 inch into the admin/map pocket on the backside but no big deal to me.

The whole point of the mod was to give me some more purchase on the mags. Works great!

And here are the pictures!
