Trying a new stiffening material out
« on: October 09, 2017, 03:44:23 PM »
Hey all,

I had a request from a customer in Australia to make some protective pouches to hold medium format film backs for his RZ67 camera. I've made pouches before, but now I'm getting the hang of things, and using CAD to really double check the math helps out a TON. I just need a laser now to do the cutting for me so I don't have to do this sh** by hand :o

Anyhow, he requested two, but for them to be quite rigid.
First ones I made used 1/8" Volara closed cell foam. Still too floppy. After seeing Gear Dynamic's post about his mag pouch construction and his use of plastic mesh as a stiffener, I realized I had a roll of some Phifer window shade material in the back of the fabric closet.

So the total sandwich of materials consists of 4 layers:

1000D Cordura (outer)
Plastic mesh (stiffener)
Polyester Felt(softer padding)
200D nylon(liner)

Overall, it really give nice body to this project, but still remains flexible.
Binding tape works for me, as I build my stuff to take a beating. I would like to try this again with top stitching however, as time allows.

cheers,
Dan

Here tis!
(ruler in photograph is marked in inches)

******************************************************************************************************************************
In my google searching, I found "pet screen" material, which is available at most home improvement stores, not to mention amazon. It seems to have enough body to stand up to things, not to mention the ability to use it for mesh pockets and the like. I'm going to order a roll of this(below) to try out.
Phifer 3032233 PetScreen Single Roll, 60" x 96", Black

A similar product available through Wal-Mart, albeit 48" width. 7ft length:
