Trademarking a brand name?

What's up everyone, not sure if this is going in the right place so feel free to move it if it should be somewhere else.

So I want to start using social media with my brand name and hopefully start selling a few things either from Instagram or maybe Etsy, not sure yet. But, I am wondering how important is it to trademark my brand name? Is it something I should do before I even tell anyone what it is? Or is it really not that important at all? I've always thought that before I start using the name to sell things on the internet I should probably trademark it, but I figured you guys would have some thoughts or personal experience to offer on the topic.

That was a good article. So say I didn't register the name and someone else goes and registers the name I'm using, I would have no power to fight back, correct?
