Depends on what SPI you're after. More stitches = Stronger (you can over-do it, it's fabric dependent).

Sew a line, grab a ruler and place it at the start of a stitch that is fully formed and count the fully formed stitches until you reach the 1" mark. That gives you your SPI. If you look at other gear you like, you can use their SPI as a reference. Eagle Industries has a really high SPI (12 or so) in the gear I have, and I think I personally have 9-10 stitches per inch in most 500d stuff I make.

I use a 4mm stitch length for most seaming, and I've never had a seam pop in 2 years of making stuff. Binding, I tighten it down to 3mm(8 SPI roughly).

I use 3-3.3 mm = 3 stitches per 1 centimetre. Longer stitches look cheaper

3,5mm as standard and 5mm for sewing folded edges on fabric with a tolerable shortening of the finished length.

I have my old Singer set at 6-8 SPI. Seems to be fine so far!
