What are you using for grommets on pouches?
« on: March 30, 2015, 02:54:54 PM »
I am currently using the C.S. Osborn anodized grommets size 0, with a press n snap tool. It looks like they are Brass material that is anodized black. They are a U.S. product, so that's why I started using them. Is there another product that I should look at?
Thanks Scott

I would think they are fine.  I use Fasnap size O, they are also brass with some sort of paint.  I have COY498 and TAN499 with the paint, then they have two versions of black, anodized and enamel.  They are also a U.S. product.  I am using the Press N' Snap too, love it.

another C.S. Osborn user here, the quality of their tool is really good. i started with the kit for grommets (http://www.csosborne.com/NOK231.HTM) and snaps (http://www.csosborne.com/snap_setter_no_230.htm) and then i bought also the revolving punch (http://www.csosborne.com/NO155.HTM) a bit expensive but you can feel the quality.

I've been using CS Osborne black oxided brass grommets with Midget Setter for years.

I also use #4 and #5 spur grommets with the industrial setting die from a GI Tent Repair Kit that was given to me.  It came with the #4 and #5 industrial setting dies, the hole punches, sewing palm, hand sewing awl, a couple hundred spur grommets, rawhide hammer, patching materials, adhesive, 3 strand cotton shoe thread and #138 OD nylon thread.  Like this one:

Kinda ironic considering I turned down the only slot available at 5/19SFG, Tent Repair Specialist. I felt insulted being an accomplished Mortar Maggot, a Warrior.  Assumed  I would just be the  Company Bitch Boy stuck on KP every drill weekend. I didn't see the big picture, that  I could have been doing the same thing I do now, making custom gear or rigger mods to gear for the Team long tabbers, and tasked out to enhance mortar fire as needed.

I'm looking at adding grommets to my pouches, but I don't know which size and tools I need. I've seen some grommets that are lower quality and others that look and feel sturdier. What do you guys recommend? I like the one on the bottom of the Maxpedition Rollypoly (pic below). It's 11/16" dia with a 5/16" hole and a rounded profile. This would be good for larger utility pouches etc. Maybe a slightly smaller one for mag pouches.

Any help appreciated!

I use Scovill fasteners.

I use the rolled rim grommets and washers size #1. I also get my snaps from them, they are the makers of Pull-The-Dot snaps.

I use the General Tools 3/8 setter kit, it's a hand setter kit.

Thanks for the reply! I'm going to check out the rolled rim grommets and washers, as that's what I think this one is. I'll post results when I have some.

I ended up buying a hand press with a set of dies and a 1/4" jam for cutting the hole in the fabric. For grommets, I went with a rolled rim or spur grommet and washer in size #00. The next size up seemed too large for small pouch applications. These are a black oxide finish.

What is the proper name for the grommets with a mesh screen like on a boonie?
